Expanding Cancer Care and Emergency Services for Tacoma
Built on a challenging tight site, this five-story, 185,000 SF expansion and 20,000 SF renovation features a comprehensive cancer center and emergency department with a level 2 trauma center.

Supporting the hospital's goal to provide a healthy, healing environment and high-quality care, the new emergency department has 77 patient exam and treatment rooms on two floors. The cancer center includes radiation therapy and oncology services along with a state-of-the-art new Cyberknife room and a linear accelerator vault.

One significant challenge was relocating an existing transformer that fed power to an occupied wing of the hospital, which needed to be moved prior to work on the new stair tower. VECA worked closely with the general contractor and project team to address this critical path item, bringing the new transformer room online early so the rest of the project could be built around it. All surrounding buildings remained fully operational throughout construction, requiring strict infection control adherance and planning for no disruptions to ongoing care. The new facility ties into the existing with a total of 21 entry points, requiring extensive integration of old and new hospital systems.
